22-year old Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud on self esteem and being “the ugly one”.

“My self-esteem was at rock-bottom. If something negative was written about my looks, I’d clock the other girls folding the newspaper up or hiding it away. It was like we all agreed to pretend it hadn’t happened. My way of dealing with it was to go home to Runcorn in Cheshire as often as I could to go out with my mates and get slaughtered. It was the only thing I could do to block everything out. I was the ugly one, the odd one out. It turned into a beauty contest. People on radio and TV started making nasty comments about me and I felt awful. I didn’t feel I could burden anybody with my problems. It all sounded so pathetic. I was tempted to turn to drink and drugs but ultimately I’m quite a strong person.”

Nicola is now engaged to businessman Carl Davies, and is happier than ever.

“I might not always be smiling, but I’m happier than I’ve ever been.”

We’re glad to see things are looking up for her, she’s always been on of our faves, certainly better than that bitch Nadine.
